Pool plants  (Submitted on 27/05/2001)

Question :
I am trying to find out suitable plants to place around an above ground swimming pool. I dont want the roots of the plants to affect the liner of the pool. I live on the coast near Sydney. I would like to use natives if possible.

Answer :
Well — this is a nice question thank you. You've got a couple of things to consider regarding planting around the pool which I've taken into account for you here: There's the fact that most flowering natives like the Bottlebrush have fine flowers that disintegrate into particles after flowering. These will then float into the pool and contribute to blocking the filter. Also, their flowering season is peak summer (hot and dry enabling the pollen to travel well) — just the prime time you'll be wanting to use the pool!! So, also considering your roots and coastal positioning, I'd like to offer suggestions based on natives and non natives as starting points for your planning, then you could go either way or mix if you felt like it.

Palms and Hibiscus work well — the Hibiscus flowers in summer and also dies off on the plant; ie not travelling into the pool. Bird of paradise would be lovely. Also you may like to consider Camelia Sasanqua.

To keep to just natives, have you considered the range of small native grasses ? Could be great in your locale: Queensland Blue, Kangeroo Grass and Fountain Grass which has small pink fluffy flowers would give another feel totally to your pool area. You should have no root problems at all with these. Enjoy !
