Pergola planning  (Submitted on 10/01/2001)

Question :
I am building a Pergola attached to the side of the house. The base of the pergola area is already concrete and I will be setting stirrups into the cement for the poles. How do I get the lines and the levels square?

Answer :
Depending on the actual location of the pergola, a series of string lines are the best method of setting out your project. If square, you may be able to use the side of your existing dwelling to find level and square the edges etc.
Basically, run a series of string lines, measure out your lengths and widths of the project, also measure diagonally corner to corner, this will ensure the project is square.
The height of the stirrups can also be gauged with a stringline, but ensure you have enough depth on your piers, app. 450mm is sufficient. Always use high stirrups so the timber posts are not in close contact with the ground and moisture.
An alternative to piers would be to bolt the base plate to the slab, but you need to ensure that the concrete slab has sufficient depth and is of a high standard.
