WINTER FLOWERS: I am new to gardening and especially when it comes to planting flowers. I am looking for flowers which will last during winter (or ideally throughout the year) to plant. Any suggestions ?

A couple of favourites that flower in Winter but have fragrance as well:
1. Wintersweet A deciduous shrub growing to about 2.5m 2. Daphne Evergreen small shrub - 1.5m - frost hardy. Likes morning sun and slightly acidic soil. Doesn't like to dry out. 3. Jonquils (and freesias). Plant bulbs in Autumn for late Winter early Spring flowering. 4. Stock (Matthiola incana) are rapidly growing annuals. Sow seed in mid autumn.
Or, if you like creepers, I've a whole fence covered with Orange Trumpet Creeper (I live in Sydney so I don't know how much colder your winter gets). But it's just about the only thing right in the middle of winter that is a wall of wonderful colour. I saw them grow in Qld and didn't think it would do well down here, but it's blooming magic! After it flowers (about 2 months), it loses all its leaves, at which time it's really easy to cut back / tame, then quickly greens up again and provides excellent privacy on a lattice trellis I've erected above the fence. Note that Orange trumpet creeper is quite poisonous, so if you children or pets, think carefully before planting it.
Also, all the following bloom in Winter in Australia (check with your local nursery to see if this applies in your area): Abutilon + Ageratum + Antennaria + Bergenia + Camellia + Cineraria + Clivia + Correa + Crocus(Late) + Croton + Daffodil(Late) + Dianthus + Diosma + Erigeron + Euonymus + Euphorbia + Euryops + Fairy Primrose + Fijiian Fire Plant + Fountain Grass + Fuschia + Geraldton Wax + Grevillea + Hebe "Speedwell" + Hellibore + Kangaroo Paw + Lachenalia + Ladies' Purses + Lamb's Ears + Lenton Rose + Liriope + Lobelia + Luculia + Nemesia + Pansies + Pieris + Polyanthus + Primula + Snowflakes + Spring Heath + Sweet William + Viola + Wallflower + Westringia + Witch Hazel
